Belfast memories from Spain!

spring tourneyOn Sunday at Miraflores a fun Spring Tourney Valentines Mixed tournament took place at the club, with the ladies having to disport an item of red clothing and gentlemen in all white (love is in the air). Two groups of 4 played a round robin set and winners and runners up in each group contested semis and final eventually. No joy for us as we narrowly missed making semis in count back! Belfast did well though.

No love lost in final however as it was closely contested and went to a tie break! But all forgiven and fun was had over a glass of cava and tapas following the event with prizes for all.

On Friday the Windsor contingent motored with Friends to the Malaga tennis club where I played a mens doubles. This at one time was a very prestigious club but has faded a little I think. Ashley with whom I travelled said his partner last time out at this club was John Lloyd! And John was the weakest on court!

After the tennis we ate near the marina in Malaga. Squillions of Euros have been spent on the marina  making it a fabulous berthing spot for ships and boats of all sizes. Shops and restaurants line the marina and at the far end huge cruisers berth. A catamaran of enormous proportions goes to Palma Mallorca twice a day taking about 5 hours.

This week the first Spring tourney begins on Thursday at Hotel Don Carlos. We have entered and yesterday went down to see but no draw has yet been made. But a junior tournament final was in progress the standard frighteningly awesome! Look out for a young GB player Gaby Taylor who was runner up in Florida’s Orange Bowl. The Orange Bowl is really like the World junior championships of tennis. A fantastic prospect being coached somewhere in Marbella. The ball just goes like a rocket forehand and doublehanded backhand.

By the way, a young David Williams played in the Orange Bowl a few years back!

Carole has gone on court in her Monday morning ladies group at Miraflores – a good start to the day.
For me it is back home to tidy up and get the washing out on the line!

Hasta luego!
