Louis Standup at QFTWriter/Director Louis McCullagh has just returned with a major award from the World Premiere of his short film STANDUP (filmed in Belfast in 2012) at the Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF).

George Marshall, Chief Executive of RIIFF said “STANDUP is an exceptional and brave film which addresses an issue that is global in scope.”

RIIFF has been recognised for the last 10 years by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the Oscars. STANDUP screened at RIIFF’s top venue the prestigious 1900 seater VETS Auditorium and was one of 200+ films selected by RIIFF from over 4,700 submissions from over 50 countries.

Louis said “Winning at our first festival in the company of award winning filmmakers from around the world is an amazing recognition of the talent of the 40+ cast and crew”.
STANDUP is about the aftermath in a family of a teen suicide. Unusually it uses comedy to try to approach this most difficult topic.

Louis McCullagh said “Death by suicide is unlike any other, a taboo subject. Those left behind are at risk themselves, the worst are boys and men who hide their feelings and shun help. It is a contagious type of death. We hope the award will help get people talking and help improve support for those affected by it.”

Louis’ previous 2 films screened in 30 International film festivals, winning awards in Australia, Canada, USA and Ireland.

STANDUP is a My Neighbour Films project, produced by Christopher Myers and Paul Brolly with support from NI Screen.
