Volunteers wanted - your country etc etc
Disability Sports NI is currently
looking for people, ideally with experience of leading or coaching
Boccia, to volunteer for the 2011 Boccia World Cup which is being
held in Northern Ireland for the first time this summer. The
event which is a qualifying event for the London 2012 Paralympic
Games, is being jointly organised by the University of Ulster, GB
Boccia and Disability Sports NI and will see 500 players, coaches
and officials from over 30 countries converge on the University of
Ulster’s Jordanstown campus from the 18th – 26th August 2011, for
eight days of top level competition.
The event is
sanctioned by the CPISRA, the world governing body for the sport,
and is being generously funded by UK Sport and Sport Northern
Ireland.
The sport of Boccia is a target sport, similar to
bowls and is widely played throughout Northern Ireland by a range of
people with physic al, sensory and learning disabilities. However at
a Paralympic level and at international competitions like the Boccia
World Cup, the sport is played by athletes with high levels of
functional impairment, which affects their motor skills. To
support the organisation of the event, Disability Sports NI is
recruiting volunteers, ideally with some experience of Boccia, to
train as time keepers and line judges for the event. However other
volunteering roles will also be available.
Commenting on the
volunteering opportunities Disability Sports NI’s Director, Kevin
O’Neill said ‘This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the
hundreds of Boccia leaders trained by Disability Sports NI, to
increase their knowledge of the sport, to see it played at the
highest possible level and to play an active part in organising one
of the world’s largest disability sports spectacles’. For
further information or to register as a volunteer for the event please
contact Paul Whitten at Disability Sports NI: Telephone 028 9038
7062 or email: pwhitten@dsni.co.uk
