Superset Invitation Tournament – Saturday 9th June
The Third Annual Superset Invitation tournament was held on Saturday 9th June at Windsor LTC. The event was again blessed with wonderful weather as well as excellent tennis as the top eight male players in Ulster were invited to participate in the one-set format. Players taking part were Nelson Boyle, Tony Davison, Ryan Gamble, Conor O’Kane, Mark Prenter, Neil Stewart Alex Watt, and Gordon Watt . Carlos Miranda was forced to watch from the balcony this year due to injury. A veteran men’s doubles event ran alongside which proved equally competitive and entertaining.
The singles matches proved very close and qualification for the final was in doubt until the very end of the group matches. Nelson Boyle came from 1-4 down against Alex Watt to win 6-5 and win his group whilst Conor O’Kane finally clinched a final place with a nail-biting 6-5 win against Mark Prenter in his final group match.
These two then contested a very close final with some great tennis and Nelson Boyle just edged out Conor O’Kane 6-4 to win the President’s Trophy and collect the winner’s cheque.
In the veterans doubles event, Steven Leeman and Colin Smyth caused an upset when they saved a match point in the final before going on to win 6-5 against the favourites Willie Noteman and Peter Minnis.
Ulster Branch president Vivienne Stewart and Windsor LTC President Ken Reid presented the trophies to round off an extremely enjoyable day’s tennis.
It is hoped the fourth Superset will take place at the same time next year as it has proved very popular with all those who take part, and it is particularly hopeful for the future of the event that half of the entrants in the singles were under 18 with one of those reaching the final and the twin Watt boys both finishing a close second in each of the groups. The organisers are also considering expanding the tournament further next year with the possible addition of a ladies singles event. |
