Windsor D vs Civil Service

PDF Print E-mail
Civil Service are top of our league so this was a big match for us this week.  We were beaten by them in the first half of the season - you may remember Decker's entertaining match report with his prosaic style so different to mine.  PLEASE email by return if you would like someone other than me to do the match reports.  First 5 replies will get a tenner.....

Although Spurs were playing Leeds and super super sub Ivan Kerr had divided loyalties, he was first up against Roy Killen.  Ivan started this encounter by introducing himself as the ringer.  That was before he appeared on court in his B team home strip.  You know the one....IK embroidered subtly on the right sleeve?  It intimidated me so it was no surprise that his opponent crumbled after only a handful of shots and Ivan came through very easily in 3.

I was next against Billy Bell.  The best part of my match was the shower afterwards. Though, in all honesty, I didn't really need it.

George took up the baton at that stage to play his old mucker, Clive Gilmour.  George has played him often enough and has watched him in the Masters often enough to know that the secret to beating Clive is to move him.  He did this well in the first set but somehow allowed the second to run away with him.  George regrouped, won the third and despite toying with the idea of losing the fourth came through in 4 to give us a 2-1 lead with one to play.

Ivan was getting excited at this stage as the possibility of watching the 2nd half of Leeds/Spurs was looking more and more like a probablility.

Bring on Jay and Dickie Headley.  Jay cantered to a 8/0 lead in the first and it looked as if this was going to be the upset of the season.  We talk a lot about court coverage down in the Ds, but it is something which most of us aspire to but the only one who actually practices it is Jay.  Throughout this game he moved, chased and retrieved well but he had met his match in Dickie who matched everything Jay threw at him...and then added something more.  It was a great game of cat and mouse, but unfortunately it was Civil Service who got the cream in the end.  This match, however, did last longer than the other 3 put together.  Ivan came up in time to watch the credits on ITV sport, while we came away with a very creditable 7-7 draw.

Jay is showing the great, the good and the hopeful of east Belfast round Campbell next Wednesday, Decker is cold weather training in Alpe d'Huez in the hope that his tennis elbow recovers, I am off to Italy with 91 13 year olds and may well lose the will to live while out there so the Ds will be struggling next week.  George is in charge, so look forward to his prose next week, and if you have a budgie/auntie/granny who ever drank a guinness in Windsor who would like a game next week at home vs CIYMS don't forget to email him by Wednesday morning.  He will pay you a tenner too.
