.. . . but third from bottom!

Windsor B v Civil Service

Last match of season, looking for a good finish

Jonathan v Billy Kane

Didn’t see this one, but Jonathan was not put off by Billy’s unusual style and on-court antics, and came through in three fairly comfortable sets. An unbeaten second half since his return – surely he will move up the team again next season? 3-0 Windsor

Carl v Roy Roulston

Roy is a decent fella but very intense on court – he won the first 9-1 before Carl got to grips with his game. After that it was fairly comfortable for Carl as he played tight squash and Roy struggled to contain his temper as mistakes started to flow and his racket disappeared around the court. 3-1 Carl

Me v Michael Dennison

Another encounter in the series against old rival Michael, and this was a cracking game to play in. As usual Michael put the ball away when given the chance, and I tried to move him around to keep out of trouble. Unfortunately the ref (Billy) had a total nightmare, giving some truly bizarre decisions, initially against Michael in the first couple of games. Billy’s response when strongly questioned by Michael was “If you don’t like my decisions you can f*** off!”, which surprisingly did little to defuse the situation, and one or two Civil Service players had to intervene to prevent the two taking the argument any further. Billy evened things up by giving a couple of shocking decisions against me, so at least he wasn’t biased. Despite the woeful refereeing the match was even all the way to the fifth before I got ahead and held on 9-3.

Stephen v Stephen

Stephen played Stephen McCullough, who hits a nice ball but tends to make mistakes when pressed. Our Stephen did this well to take the first two sets easily, and recovered well from being down in the third set to come back and win it 9-7. A good performance and result to finish the season.

A 13-3 maximum took us to a final position of FOURTH in the league – pretty good after being bottom at the end of the first half. The return of Jonathan plus better form from the rest of us in the second half brought about this transformation.

Four pizzas, swiss roll and cake finished things off for the year. Well done everyone who played on the teams and keep training hard over the summer.
